Hello, Before this week I had a similar understanding for the prison systems. I have had the ability in other classes to learn about the system as well. I have watched similar videos for the understanding as well as engaged in the prison system from a designer point of view. I know that is different from this weeks concepts but it was very helpful as I know the prison system and design is very counterproductive to the space, mental health, physical health, and more. This helped shaped my understanding of the prison system in a way that I view the prison system as broken. Taking a step farther this week I was able to learn about the term "qualified immunity" with in the first listed podcast called "An Immune System" by Codeswitch. This was very interesting as I have already come across the article and TedTalk by KimberlĂ© Crenshaw explaining  her term "intersectionality" in past classes. Rewatching and learning on the topic is a reassurance that it is a very...

Hello, After reading, listening to the podcasts, and understanding the power points for the week, I have a grasp on white privilege and educational inequality. This was shown quite well in the NPR podcast called "Why Busing Did Not End School Segregation." It was a podcast explaining a desegregation program in the Boston area to bus children from underprivileged locations to more privileged location for schooling. This was and still is a debated topic with many different views. Regardless, this system would not have to be in place is schooling was equal around the areas but unfortunately this is still not true. This shows the white privilege and inequality relation because the schools the busses are taking the children to are in white suburban areas with a nice education. A benefit for the white families in the educational system is that they do not have to worry as much about a quality education in a simple proximity that the black families must worry about. Affirmative acti...

Hello, The NPR episode called "I'm Not Racist, I'm Argentine", speaks about the light colored argentine and the dark colored corn cart man. In this real life scenario colorism and racism is displayed. Pushing over the cart when hispanic himself the argentine man was being racist while colorism is in his favor due to being lighter toned. Both men having a similar background of being immigrants in America and not necessarily being welcome under the Trump administration. This sets the tone for American colorism.  As far as actors and actresses go, biracial and lighter toned skin is typically more represented. This was shown when Amandla Stenberg turned down a role in Black Panther to let her fellow and darker toned actresses have a better shot and representation. This is a bold move and shows confidence and a great stance for advocacy.  Another point to be made is the advertisement and endorsement of colorism in the real world with make up products. They tend to promote ...

Hello, A positive representation of all racial groups in the media is important for youth in society to show equality but most importantly for the youth to learn and understand the diversity in the world. This is explained in the article "Children are not colorblind: How young children learn race." In the media or magazines, shows, books, etc.. showing diversity helps young minds understand and become aware of their surrounding friends and family. It is shown in the article that children start extremely young understand this. They studied unfamiliar faces of similar and different when they are only 6 months old. The conclusion was that the infants studied the unfamiliar different race harder than the similar one. On a different topic of positive representation in the media for all racial groups, it is important for the young children or anyone in the world to see familiar looking features on screens to represent that they can do anything. Without this you lead to stereotypica...
