Hello,
The NPR episode called "I'm Not Racist, I'm Argentine", speaks about the light colored argentine and the dark colored corn cart man. In this real life scenario colorism and racism is displayed. Pushing over the cart when hispanic himself the argentine man was being racist while colorism is in his favor due to being lighter toned. Both men having a similar background of being immigrants in America and not necessarily being welcome under the Trump administration. This sets the tone for American colorism.
As far as actors and actresses go, biracial and lighter toned skin is typically more represented. This was shown when Amandla Stenberg turned down a role in Black Panther to let her fellow and darker toned actresses have a better shot and representation. This is a bold move and shows confidence and a great stance for advocacy.
Another point to be made is the advertisement and endorsement of colorism in the real world with make up products. They tend to promote products to alter the skin tone and make everyone a bit more similar.
Colorism in my family is not too much of a big deal due to the fact that I am white. My skin tone grants me many opportunities that not everyone is offered. If anything my mother is Italian with skin that can tan very easily. My brother inherited this trait. On a slightly opposite view, he plans on traveling to France and living there. My brother has a darker skin tone when tan, thick curly hair, glasses, and facial hair. With this appearance my brother has been told he could give middle eastern looks. This was concerning to my family only because when traveling in Europe they are and were going through a true issue of middle eastern citizens being discriminated against. This is the only fear my family can possibly connect to.
