Blog Post 10 (03/27/22)

Hello,

This weeks topics covered is primarily Gender. I listened to the episode called Gender 101 for the Gender Reveal podcasts. I chose to listen and follow along with this podcast because I knew it was giving me a good base and ground to stand on for the following information this week. The podcast was covering exactly what was stated "Gender 101". I was able to decipher the difference between the definitions of words such as "cisgender","transgender", "gender", "sex", "queer", "nonbinary, "nonconforming", the list goes on and on. Lucky for me, I happen to grasp the information a bit better after having a Women's Gender Study Class already and unit in Anthropology as well but it is never hurtful to review again. Standing out to me through the podcast is always grasping more information on the ever changing definitions. I think it is so important as the world changes around us.

I also chose to read upon the State of the LGBTQ Community in 2020. I thought this article would fit well as I stated before the world is changing around us in all aspects just like the pandemic that changed everyones lives. The following article the State of the LGBTQ Community in 2020, really touched upon how individuals associated with such groups were coping during the hard times. As the pandemic brought uncertainty, hardships in jobs and families, and lots of discrimination, the community began to struggle. The jobs were hard to find or keep, the lifestyle was hard to keep up with and medical attention was being denied based on discrimination. Mental health was beginning to be harmed especially in this community. It was said that "15 percent of LGBTQ Americans report postponing or avoiding medical treatment due to discrimination including nearly 3 in 10 transgender individuals". These stats and facts are sad for not only the community but also the nation and world.

 Hello,  This week we discussed MENA experiences through podcasts, videos, and articles.  After watching the first video by Unicef about a young Syrian refugee, it is understood she has been through a lot but has a positive outlook on life. She explains her story about fleeing, traveling, swimming, and watching others and even family pass away from or during this experience. Letting the audience know she is affected by this but somehow still smiling and looking into her future. She is able to attend schooling and receive an education. She wants to become an english teacher when she grows older and views herself as a strong individual. In this you see resilience and resistance for women and young girls. Blog Post 13 (04/10/22)

 Hello, This week we learned about Latinx and Native American populations. I will be reflecting on the following topic with the use of the podcasts and readings for the week. By watching the video called "The Mental Health Crisis Among Latina Teens", I am able to expand upon racism affecting mental health. The video was very interesting as they followed young girls stories in Wisconsin with their struggles in mental health with racism, documentation, anxiety, and depression being a large contributing factor. Racism is affecting mental health as students are getting bullied or trying to find their way in the world. This is already a struggle as a teen and then piling on cultural expectations and values weigh the young girls down. Another huge factor is the first generation status or the undocumented scare of their parents. With this weighing down the children you would expect anxiety to approach. Blog Post 12 (04/03/22)

Hello,  This week we discussed Black and Multiracial individuals and families. Not all multiracial people identify as multiracial especially in census check boxes. According to Johnson and Nadal in the Multiracial Microaggressions chapter, it is hard to find a box with your racial identity without checking multiple boxes. Best explained by the chapter "microagressions consisting of several categories including micro-assaults (namely, conscious or explicit verbal and behavioral interactions, micro-insults (unintentional demeaning actions or remarks about ones racial heritage), and micro-invalidations (actions that invalidate a person's racial reality)."  This is scene in our history and in everyday life.
