Blog Post 11 (03/27/22)

 Hello,

This week we learned about Asian Americans and Pacific islanders (AAPI) so in this blog I will be reflecting on the podcasts, readings, videos, and slideshows from the past week.

I learned a lot about the culture and the so called "9th island" in the google podcast "Sugar Mountain" this week. Pacific Islanders are trying to preserve their cultural values in the 9th island area of Las Vegas. A lot of citizens have moved to las Vegas for opportunity and economics, cost of living, and a variety of other reasonings on the main land of the United States versus the islands. This is why Las Vegas is a hub called the 9th island. The hub continues their culture as some spoke upon in the podcast. Many said it was easy to keep the culture alive while they had to cook for them selves and not rely on the traditional family meals right next doors. They do this to continue their roots even if they are not easy available. Some joined civic clubs and create their own communities in that one area. This is not always the case though the older generations are sometimes offended by the 9th island reference as it is not part of their culture. Overall stated in the podcast and the newest perspective is that "in the end we are all Asian island pacifiers no matter where you create and acknowledge your culture.

The last statement was a strong statement in my mind as we reviewed the term perpetual foreigner in the slideshows for the week. It refers to when society continually asks Asian Americans"where are you actually from?" as if they descend from another country. This is not always the case especially nowadays with true Americans who happen to be asian. This also includes the stereotypes that follow the Asian Americans like a "model minority, good at math, smart, and stand up citizens". Also according to the video for the week, Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the United States but it is hard for Americans to even name Asian Americans because of the lack of media coverage they receive. This can trace back to banning Chinese immigration and calling the yellow peril during WW2 while creating concentration camps. America was trying to avoid the group all together. This is saddening.
