 Hello,

This week we covered neurodiversity and neurodiverse individuals through podcasts, videos, and readings. While reading the first article and readings to understand the topic I came across this statement. "A person is disabled not by their impairment, but by the failure of their environment to accomodate their needs. In other words, disability results not from autism itself but instead from living in a society which tends o be physically, socially, and emotionally inhospitable towards autistic people." In the podcast, Juicervose by Radiolab, autism is described as a sensory spectrum that many kids and adults lay upon these days. In the podcast, Juicervose by Radiolab, autism was not nearly as popular ro researched but reminded others and families about movies such as Rainman and that was the experience other knew about. This is not always the case. An example from the family featured in the episode was about their young son Owen who lost his speech and motor skills as autism was setting in. This continued to happen until Owen did not sleep, eat, and focus. Eventually Owen was able to find his connection to the world and comfort through Disney movies. he was able to communicate with reciting scenes of the movies and speak again. He gained confidence in this way and coped with his autism through the stories. I find this to be very interesting as I have many close friends and family members with autism. Each of the cope in a different way and find their niche and comfort. I can relate to Owen and his family in the podcast as my youngest brother communicates through reciting books he has read, videos, movies, and scenes he has watched as well. Asking a direct question is pressuring and confusing for him but as you connect to his level of comfort or baseline, the question becomes very easy to answer. Another fact about the neurodiversity is that the child is within and they are highly intelligent as well. I have full confidence that my youngest brother will be a engineer as he builds with legos or creates products by looking at an image and not using any direction but can tell you, you are doing it incorrectly. It is fascinating.
